Residential and commercial solar systems use the same core technology — modules, inverters, mounting structures, protection. Almost everything else about the two projects is different.
Load profile
This is the most important difference and the one least often discussed. A commercial building consumes most of its electricity between roughly 9 am and 7 pm — precisely when a solar array generates. A home consumes most of its electricity in the evening, after generation has stopped. That means a commercial system typically self-consumes a much higher share of what it produces, which is usually worth more than exporting it.
Tariff
Commercial tariffs are generally higher than residential ones, and often include demand charges based on maximum demand. Because savings are calculated against the tariff you avoid paying, the same generation is worth more to a commercial consumer.
Subsidy
Residential consumers may be eligible for Central Financial Assistance under PM Surya Ghar, up to ₹78,000 for systems of 3 kW and above. Commercial installations are not covered by this scheme. Businesses may instead be able to claim depreciation on solar assets under the Income Tax Act — confirm the current position with your tax advisor.

Structure and installation
Residential installations are usually on terraces, with structures designed to keep the roof usable. Commercial installations more often involve metal sheet roofs, larger spans, carports or ground mounts, and require greater attention to structural loading, walkways and safe access for maintenance.
Documentation
A residential project may reasonably be delivered on a straightforward proposal and installation schedule. A commercial project should come with a single-line diagram, generation estimate based on your actual consumption data, structural assessment, protection design and a documented commissioning handover. If those are missing from a commercial proposal, ask for them.
Which is "better"?
Neither — they solve different problems. What both share is the same failure mode: a system sized from a package rather than from consumption data. That is the mistake worth avoiding in either case.
