PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana Explained

What the scheme covers, what it pays, what it requires — and what it explicitly does not include.

PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana is a Government of India scheme that provides Central Financial Assistance to eligible residential consumers installing rooftop solar. It is the main national mechanism through which household rooftop solar is supported.

The assistance structure

CapacityCentral Financial Assistance
1 kWUp to ₹30,000
2 kWUp to ₹60,000
3 kW and aboveUp to ₹78,000 — the maximum under the applicable structure

Amounts are as per the applicable scheme structure and are subject to current government guidelines.

What "up to ₹78,000" actually means

It is a ceiling, not a per-kW rate. A 3 kW system and a 10 kW system attract the same maximum central assistance. This is the single most misunderstood point about the scheme, and it is worth being clear about before you size a system: capacity above 3 kW is funded by you.

Who it is for

The scheme is intended for residential consumers with a valid domestic electricity connection, a suitable rooftop with adequate shadow-free area, and clear ownership or documented permission to install. It does not cover commercial or industrial installations.

The process, in outline

  1. Register on the official national portal with your state, DISCOM and consumer number.
  2. Apply for feasibility approval — your DISCOM assesses whether the requested capacity is technically feasible at your connection.
  3. Install through a registered vendor, using equipment meeting the specified standards.
  4. Inspection and net metering — the DISCOM inspects the installation and installs a bi-directional meter, then issues a commissioning certificate.
  5. Submit bank details through the portal; assistance is credited as per the scheme's process and timelines.

Things worth knowing before you apply

  • Approval rests with the government authority and your DISCOM. No installer can guarantee subsidy approval — treat any such guarantee as a warning sign.
  • Scheme rules, vendor registration requirements and equipment specifications can change. Confirm the current position before committing.
  • Some states operate additional state-level support alongside the central scheme. Check your state's current position separately.
  • Timelines for DISCOM approval, inspection and disbursal vary considerably by location.

Policies and eligibility may change. Please verify the latest information through the official PM Surya Ghar portal before making any financial decision.
