A 10 kW system is where residential solar starts to behave like a small commercial project. The equipment is the same in kind, but the approvals, the structural requirements and the electrical design all step up a level.
Where 10 kW fits
Ten kilowatts typically suits villas, farmhouses, large independent houses, small housing societies and small commercial premises — broadly, properties consuming around 1,100 to 1,300 units a month.
Generation
Expect in the region of 1,200 units a month, or roughly 14,000 to 14,500 units a year, from an unshaded, well-oriented installation in average Indian conditions.
Roof area and structure
Plan for approximately 1,000 sq ft of shadow-free area. At this size, row spacing matters: rows must be far enough apart that they do not shade each other in winter, when the sun is lower. A design that ignores inter-row shading looks efficient on paper and underperforms in January.
Indicative cost
Larger systems generally cost slightly less per kW than small ones, because fixed costs are spread wider. A 10 kW residential installation commonly falls in the region of ₹5 lakh to ₹6.5 lakh before subsidy, depending on configuration.
Approvals become more involved
- Sanctioned load. Most DISCOMs cap permitted rooftop capacity in relation to your sanctioned load. A 10 kW system usually requires a sanctioned load to match.
- Connection type. Depending on your state and load, a 10 kW system may require a three-phase connection.
- Net metering approval. Feasibility approval from the DISCOM is required before installation, and inspection before the net meter is installed.
- Subsidy ceiling. Central assistance under PM Surya Ghar remains capped at up to ₹78,000 for eligible residential systems of 3 kW and above — it does not scale with capacity.
Is it worth going to 10 kW?
Only if you consume the output. Under most state net-metering policies, exported units are credited rather than paid at full retail value, and there are usually limits on how much can be banked. A system sized well above your consumption tends to produce electricity you receive limited value for. The right answer comes from twelve months of billing data, not from a target capacity.
